Financial assistance from the National Institutes of Health (NIH) in the form of Small Business Innovation Research (SBIR) grants was awarded to PICS, Inc. to support the development and evaluation of LifeSign and DietMate.

Neither the NIH nor its member institutes endorse or recommend LifeSign, DietMate, or other products. The grant awards to PICS were based entirely on peer review of the scientific merit of each proposal submitted in smoking cessation and weight loss, cholesterol reduction, and hypertension control.

(LifeSign grant support included two SBIR Phase 1 and one Phase 2 SBIR awards from the National Institute of Drug (NIDA) and one Phase 1 SBIR award from the National Cancer Institute (NCI). DietMate grant support included one SBIR Phase 1 award from the National Institute of Diabetes, Digestive and Kidney Diseases (NIDDK), three SBIR Phase 1 grants from the National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute (NHLBI), and one SBIR Phase 2 grant from the NHLBI.)
