A PICS product, DietMate comes from the same company responsible for
developing the LifeSign Stop Smoking product. With its credit card-sized
computer, LifeSign received much attention upon its arrival in the marketplace.
With DietMate, federal employee Jim Frater lost 31 pounds in 12 weeks.
By taking the computer everywhere, Frater found the hand held helpful
with its constant reminders. "It tells me every morning to weigh myself,"
says Frater, "And, after I've eaten, I key in what I ate, letting it
subtract the amount of fat, calories and cholesterol from my daily allotment.
If I overdid it, the computer will suggest smaller meals for the rest of the day."
And, DietMate isn't above reprimands. Frater comments, "If I go over,
the next morning I'll get a message which reads, 'Watch your calorie intake
more carefully today, Jim!'" When Frater reached his weight goal, the
computer played fanfare. Since the study ended, Frater has continued to use
DietMate and has maintained his target weight.
